There's no easy way to say it and no easy way to process it. This is one of the most stressful, overwhelming moments a parent can face. Your child, your baby, is now in jail, facing a DUI or another criminal charge.
You may feel fear, shame, anger, confusion, even guilt. You did your best to raise them right. You wanted more for them. And now this has happened.
Let me tell you something clearly: This does NOT define your child. This does NOT define you as a parent.
Take a deep breath. Then focus on what to do next.
You need to be in the right mindset to help. Breathe. Slow down. This is a situation, not the end of the road.
Decide on Bond
Are you going to post bond or hire a bonding company?
If the bond is high, an attorney can request a hearing or file a motion to reduce it. Just be careful. Sometimes bond motions can lead to a higher bond.
Hire an Attorney
If you can, hire an experienced DUI or criminal defense attorney early.
If funds are tight, apply for a Public Defender immediately.
Start Rehabilitation
If it's a DUI case, be proactive:
- DUI school or 48-hour program
- Alcohol and drug assessment
- Counseling or therapy
- Random testing
Courts look favorably on early action.
Follow your attorney's advice closely. Show up early. Follow ALL bond conditions.
Be There
Even if you're upset, they still need you. Their brain isn't fully developed, and they're trying to figure life out. This moment can be a turning point with your guidance.
Moving Forward
Here's what matters most: get steady, handle bond, hire an attorney or apply for a Public Defender, start rehabilitation early, prepare for court, and be there for your child. Understanding the difference between DUI and DWI in Tennessee can also help you navigate this process.
Having a child arrested and facing criminal charges is incredibly hard. I've helped hundreds of families through situations like this with strong outcomes.
You are not alone. Other families have made it through this, and you can too.
